Corporex will own the hotel; Aurora the conference center
Corporex Colorado will break ground on a $90 million, 249-room Hyatt Hotel and Conference at Fitzsimons Village on Sept. 17, officials announced on Tuesday.
The hotel will bring the first conference center to Aurora, officials said. Other hotels have meeting space that can be booked for conferences, but officials said there is nothing of this scale in Aurora.
The City of Aurora is the development partner with Corporex Colorado on the project and will own the 30,000-square-foot conference center and garage. Corporex will own and operate the Hyatt Hotel.
Construction of the hotel and conference center marks the next phase of the mixed-use Fitzsimons Village development and it is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2016.
“Aurora continues to play a major role in Colorado’s bioscience industry,” said Wendy Mitchell, president and CEO of the Aurora Economic Development Council. “The new full-service hotel and conference center will cater to this industry and create jobs as well. The project will create approximately 200 permanent jobs and approximately 685 construction jobs.”
It is being designed by TAAG Architecture and Design Force Interior Design. Turner Construction has been named the prime general contractor on the project.

“There has been a need for a hotel and conference center to accommodate the activity at the Anschutz Medical Campus and Fitzsimons Life Science District, and we are proud to partner with the city to build something that will be transformational to the area,” said Mark J. Witkiewicz, chief operating officer of Corporex Colorado. said.
“Not only will this project benefit the booming health care and bioscience industries, it will provide the City of Aurora an opportunity to further economic development at the campus and in the city,” he added.
The City of Aurora is the development partner with Corporex Colorado on the project and will own the 30,000-square-foot conference center and garage.
The campus includes the Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado Hospital, the Veterans Affairs Hospital and many highly specialized centers and institutes.
The world-class medical facilities have drawn patients from around the world seeking treatment at the campus, but a lack of hospitality services and space to accommodate those coming to the area, according to officials.
“Many of our patients and their families travel great distances for the nationally recognized, specialized pediatric care that we offer,” said Jim Shmerling, CEO of Children’s Hospital Colorado.
“Nearly one in 10 hospitalized patients we treat come to us from outside Colorado,” Shmerling continued.
“The new hotel and conference center will be a welcoming place to patients and families during potentially difficult times,” he added.
In addition to patients visiting Aurora, many health care and bioscience professionals work within the city.
As one of the largest medical-related redevelopment projects in the country, the Anschutz Medical Campus and Fitzsimons Life Science District currently employs more than 21,000 specialists dedicated to excellent patient care, education and research.
“The Hyatt Hotel and Conference Center will be a vital component to our expanding economic development in the Fitzsimons area,” Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said.
“We have long needed a conference center in the city and this will provide that and a great place for guests of our city and state to stay,” Hogan said.
Fitzsimons Village is a mixed-use development located directly south of the Anschutz Medical Campus and Fitzsimons Life Science District at East Colfax Avenue and Interstate 225.
A seven-story, 208,000 square foot Class A office building and a 490 unit apartment community eventually will join the hotel and conference center.
