Fitzsimons Hotel & Conference Center Ready To Go
Corporex Colorado and the city of Aurora are days away from breaking ground on the Hyatt Hotel and Conference Center Aurora at Anschutz Medical Campus. The $80 million project will comprise 249 hotel rooms, a 30,000-square-foot conference center and a 500-space parking garage.
“The hotel and conference center will provide benefits to patients, benefits to business travelers who are coming to the Anschutz Medical Campus and help the campus grow and blossom to become a world-class medical campus,” said Mark Witkiewicz, Corporex Colorado managing director and chief operating officer.

We feel really good about making a better community out there.”The development is part of Corporex’s 32-acre Fitzsimons Village, located just off Interstate 225 on the south side of East Col-fax Avenue.
“We’re very excited about hav-ing a hotel across the street from the medical campus. It’s some-thing that we’ve needed for a long period of time,” said Sally Mounier, the Aurora city coun-cil member who represents the Fitzsimons area.
“In addition, the parking struc-ture and conference center we’ve needed for years, and we were never able to get a deal done. The fact that we’re at a point that we’re going to be breaking ground is very exciting for us,” she said.
The hotel and conference cen-ter are a joint venture between Corporex Colorado, which is putting debt and equity toward the hotel, and the city, which will own the conference center. Auro-ra will borrow funds to build the conference center and pay back debt with sales and lodging taxes generated by the hotel, said Aurora Finance Director Jason Batchelor.
The city of Aurora currently has no Class A hotel with confer-ence facilities. The Hyatt Hotel and Conference Center Aurora at Anschutz Medical Campus will offer a large ballroom and several smaller meeting rooms. It will be located on the first floor of the hotel, which also will include a full-service restaurant and lobby.
The hotel and conference cen-ter will provide meeting space for health care, bioscience profes-sionals and others to gather for events and conferences. It also will offer a lodging option for patients and their families visit-ing hospitals, as well as business and leisure travelers.
“The time has finally come for us to fill in this critical piece of the puzzle in the Fitzsimons area as it continues to evolve into a world-class health research and care destination,” said Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan. “It will be a place where visitors can find relaxation and respite, and where medical minds can come together to col-laborate on the next big things in health care. It will be a place that helps fuel Aurora’s economy, and we are thrilled to play an active role in its completion.”
“The city is excited about the project,” added Batchelor. “We think it’s a great area for it. We’re excited to bring it to market, and we’re excited to partner with Corporex.
”Corporex Colorado and the city have been working on the project for many months. “Aurora is a great partner, and they have been great to work with,” said Witkie-wicz. “When you come into an issue, they want to roll up their sleeves and figure out a way to solve it and streamline the pro-cess to make things work.”
“Corporex has an absolutely magnificent reputation in the community,” said Mounier, who said there has been great public support for the project.
“We feel good about doing a project that is 100 percent sup-ported by the city, 100 percent supported by the community and 100 percent supported by Corporex,” said Witkiewicz.
Corporex will construct the hotel and conference center, designed by TAAG Architects, over the next 16 months.
Fitzsimons Village currently includes the 168,000-sf Fitzsi-mons 100 office building, leased to Children’s Hospital Colorado, and 153-room SpringHill Suites by Marriott. Future plans call for development of additional office and retail space, as well as apartments.
